The Caiptal of the Chinese Province Yunnan has seen a spectacular growth in recent years. Just like many other major population centres in the country. Yunnan’s energy production is mostly green, coming from hydro power. Seemingly a good thing. Countries down stream are not unanimously happy with that though.

The setting sun paints the sky over Tonle Sap Lake lavender when fisherwoman Mrs. Samnang (32) pulls her net into her small boat with the help of her two children. Metal spray cans of RAID insecticide that they use to keep the net affloat bang against the boat. The catch is poor. “Nowadays we only catch small fish. All the big fish are gone,” she comments with a sad smile on her face. When asked for the reason, she just stares and says: “They say the Chinese have built dams in the river.”

After ending up at the wrong dam yesterday I went on the road again early today to reach the Xiaowan Dam in the morning.
Today I spent 9 1/2 hours on the road with a guide and driver winding through small mountain roads to reach the Xiaowan Dam, the highest arch dam in the world.
After spending so much time in rural Cambodia with fishermen, for whom fish is their life and livelihood, it’s strange to be in Kunming in Yunnan Province in China where development is massive and it counts more that you have the latest iPad or Audi.
